The cherries for Gitaba coffee grow in soil with a rich mineral content. Near Musongati, about 40 farmers produce the cherries for this award-winning coffee which has won the Cup of Excellence three times. This is particularly impressive, as this area only recently began cultivating coffee, with most plants around five years old. Located in southeastern Burundi, Rutana Province is a new region for JNP Coffee selections. The owner first encountered Gitaba coffees when she was an observer in the 2015 Cup of Excellence competition. Beyond the successful cherries processed there in the single fermentation style, the washing station is known for the quality of its water. Drying time on African raised beds is faster in this area, typically no more than 21 days.
