Bourbon Maozi is grown in Ngozi Province, a remote, high-altitude region. When I was a young girl growing up in Burundi, my family would travel to Ngozi every summer to visit my grandparents, who welcomed many relatives into their home. I have fond memories of my mother taking us to see her old school, her education made possible thanks to sales of my grandparents’ coffee cherries. Today, we work there with an experienced woman-owned cooperative and its 600-plus members. Each woman receives a premium payment reflecting her share of sales of this high-quality coffee in the global marketplace. During and after harvest, our Q-grader advises these farmers on best practices to improve their crops and achieve the highest scores.
